The Health Ministry said Monday that it had issued a warning to a nursery that refused to enroll a Sudanese child due to complaints from other parents.
Without naming any of the parties involved, the ministry said in a statement that it had been alerted to the incident by a TV news segment, and had taken immediate steps to investigate the incident.
According to the statement, the nursery had violated “the most basic rights of humans and children.” It also noted that the Health Ministry would coordinate with the Social Affairs Ministry to conduct a racism awareness session with the complaining parents, as well as to support the Sudanese child’s family members in order to help them “overcome the ... maltreatment they have suffered.”
The ministry said it had contacted the child’s father to inform him that the nursery would now provide a place for his child. The child, however, had already been registered at another nursery.
“The Health Ministry stresses the need to respect the [United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child] and reject all forms of racial discrimination,” the statement read.
